The 7/30/2019 Newberg Report

Rangers Farm Report: Games of Monday 29 July
Box Scores

AAA: off

Nashville commences its second set of games against western foes tonight, hosting El Paso and Albuquerque before visiting Fresno and Sacramento. The Sounds are averaging 8,573 fans per game, second in the PCL only to Las Vegas and its new stadium, just ahead of Round Rock and its new affiliation with what I hear is a pretty good parent club.

AA: at Frisco 5, Arkansas (SEA) 4
Record: 17-19, +3.5 G, 50-55 overall

SP Edgar Arredondo: 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 SO, 4.24 ERA
CF Leody Taveras: 1-3, HR (2), walk, .258/.329/.344
SS Yonny Hernandez: 2-3, walk, SB (10), .294/.412/.353
2B Ryan Dorow: 1-4, HR (2), .212/.299/.277

Leody Taveras hit his fourth homer across two levels. His career high is eight with Hickory two years ago. MLB.com graded his power at 40 on the 20-80 scale, frustrating but understandable. His raw power is better -- I've seen it in person -- but translating it into live-action homers has proved daunting. Yes, he's still 20.

Edgar Arredondo has two scoreless appearances since coming off the DL.

High-A: off

Low-A: at Hickory 1, Asheville (COL) 4
Record: 24-13, +0.5 G, 65-38 overall

SP Abdiel Mendoza: 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 7 SO, 2.59 ERA
DH Melvin Novoa: 2-4, HR (7), .281/.341/.473
Tyreque Reed: 3-4, double, .278/.407/.565

When I saw Abdiel Mendoza in March, he threw a 90 MPH fastball, 82 slider and 76 curve. Per Mark Parker, Mendoza's fastball sat 90-91, and he relied heavily on the other pitches that were responsible for all nine of his swinging strikes. He and Spokane hurler Teodoro Ortega became Rangers in exchange for reliever Cory Gearrin last August.

Short-A: Spokane 9, at Eugene (CHC) 5
Record: 4-3, +1 G, 26-19, overall

Next report: Friday

Rookie: Rangers 4, Mariners 8
Record: 4-2, 0.5 GB

Next report: Friday

Five Years Ago Yesterday
Frisco's Joey Gallo hit a grand slam, and Jake Thompson had a passable if walk-prone Texas debut. I mentioned that Myrtle Beach's crowded outfield presented a challenge if the Rangers want to promote Nomar Mazara from Hickory. The Rangers resolved the situation by kicking Mazara all the way up to Frisco six days later.
