The Farm Report -- 7/11/2017

Rangers Farm Report: Games of Monday 10 July
Box Scores

AAA: off

The All-Stars of the Pacific Coast and International Leagues face off tonight in Tacoma.  Jimmy Reyes represents the Express.

AA: Frisco 7, at Springfield (STL) 4
Record: 9-9, 2 GB

SP Yohander Mendez: 6 IP, 9 H (1 HR), 4 R, 2 BB, 7 SO, 3.94 ERA
RP Reed Garrett: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6.52 ERA
RP Ricardo Rodriguez: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 SO, 3.60 ERA
LF Scott Heineman: 1-4, triple, HBP, .282/.367/.443
DH Luke Tendler: 4-4, HR (9), .278/.330/.458
2B Andy Ibanez: 1-2, double, 2 walks, .276/.345/.447
CF Jose Cardona: 2-5, SB (12), .285/.327/.401

Yohander Mendez has allowed 48 runs this season; 31 have crossed the plate on homers.  He's surrendered the most homers (19) in baseball at AA or below.  Yesterday's three-run shot by catcher Gabriel Lino temporarily put the Riders behind 4-3 in the 4th.  I would not have thought such things possible.  Prior to 2017, Mendez was as stingy on long balls as anyone I can recall.

Scott Heineman is batting .302/.404/.448 during a 25-game streak of reaching base.  High-A destroyer Ricardo Rodriguez recorded his second AA save.

High-A: at Down East 2, Buies Creek (HOU) 4
Record: 9-9, 3.5 GB

SP Emerson Martinez: 6 IP, 7 H (1 HR), 3 R, 1 BB, 6 SO, 4.71 ERA
RP Tyler Ferguson: 1 IP, 1 R, 2 SO, 9.82 ERA
CF Matt Lipka: 2-5, HR (5), .260/.308/.458
1B Carlos Garay: 2-4, double, .337/.408/.370

Can't win when you don't score, and Down East has scored two or fewer runs in 44% of its games with a record of 5-34.   The run against Tyler Ferguson scored on two errors, catcher's interference and a wild pitch.

Low-A: at Hickory 2, Delmarva (BAL) 1
Record: 12-7, tied for 1st

SP Walker Weickel: 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 6 SO, 2.12 ERA
RP Christian Torres: 2 IP, 0 R, 3 SO, 3.15 ERA

Down 1-0 in the 8th, Hickory scored twice on an Elio Castillo single and several Delmarva mistakes.  The Crawdads had only five baserunners.  Like Kyle Cody, Walker Weickel has been nearly untouchable of late, allowing one run and 14 runners in his last 20.2 innings while striking out 18.

Short-A: at Spokane 6, Hillsboro (ARI) 3
Record: 10-16, 7 GB

SP Cole Ragans: 6 IP, 4 H (1 HR), 3 R, 3 BB, 9 SO, 2.74 ERA
RP Josh Advocate: 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 SO, 3.00 ERA
3B Andretty Cordero: 2-4, double, HR (6), .312/.354/.581

Ragans tied his career-best nine strikeouts while giving up his first earned runs in four starts.  He's whiffed 34 of 95 opponents and held them to a .132/.305/.224 line.  20th-round righty Josh Advocate from Cal State Long Beach produced his best pro outing to date.

20-year-old Andretty Cordero tied Daniel Jipping for the league lead in homers and has the most of any of his three seasons after just 23 games.  Texas bumped 19-year-old IF Yonny Hernandez up from rookie ball, where he'd batted .343/.521/.457 in ten games.  He debuted at shortstop and drew a walk in four trips to the plate.

Rookie: at Rangers 2, Padres 3
Record: 7-6, 1 GB

SP Dylan Bice: 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 2 SO, 6.52 ERA
SS Chris Seise: 2-5, 2 doubles, .352/.417/.444
C Sam Huff: 2-4, triple, .295/.367/.636
RF Justin Jacobs: 2-4, double, .467/.553/.667

Huff hit well in rookie league last year, so his current production isn't unexpected.  I wouldn't mind seeing a few at-bats in Spokane, but they're already trying to find action for four catchers.  In Surprise, he can catch every other day and DH on the side.

Five Years Ago Yesterday
Frisco's Nick Tepesch allowed a solitary run over eight innings, Jurickson Profar homered, and Hickory's Rougned Odor tripled and singled.

Today's Starters:
The entire system is off.
