The Farm Report -- 6/16/2017

Rangers Farm Report: Games of Thursday 15 June
Box Scores

AAA: Round Rock 6, at New Orleans (MIA) 3
Record: 32-35, 8.5 GB

SP Anthony Bass: 2.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 5 SO, 4.53 ERA
RP Ernesto Frieri: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 SO, 2.19 ERA
LF Travis Snider: 2-4, walk, .301/.376/.435
3B Will Middlebrooks: 1-3, double, walk, .250/.348/.510
SS Jason Martinson: 2-4, 2 doubles, 2 triples, .250/.364/.524

Frieri made his Round Rock debut.  As I've mentioned, he's famous around these parts for being owned so utterly by the Rangers during his time as LAA's closer, but he pitched well for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before opting out of his contract two weeks ago.

Round Rock is 17-11 since bottoming out (I hope) at nine games under .500.  Among the league's rotation members, Tyler Wagner, Allen Webster and Eddie Gamboa rank worst, eighth-worst and tenth-worst in ERA, respectively, and that includes five pitchers toiling for high-elevation teams.

AA: at Frisco 4, San Antonio (SDG) 6
Record: 29-37, 10 GB
Video Recap

SP Yohander Mendez: 6 IP, 9 H (2 HR), 6 R, 2 BB, 2 SO, 3.78 ERA
CF Carlos Gomez: 1-3, HR (1)
1B Juremi Profar: 1-4, HR (7), .268/.289/.408
C Jose Trevino: 2-4, .236/.285/.311
SS Michael De Leon: 2-4, .245/.286/.304

Mendez has allowed more homers in half a season than during his entire career up to 2017:
2012-2016: 15 homers, 1 per 79 batters faced
2017: 16 homers, 1 per 20 batters faced

He's allowing flies at a slightly higher rate than in years past, but not nearly enough to account for such a huge increase in homers.

Mike Napoli was 0-4 with two strikeouts.

High-A: at Down East 0, Myrtle Beach (CHC) 7
Record: 23-43, 17.5 GB

SP Richelson Pena: 5 IP, 3 H (1 HR), 3 R, 3 BB, 9 SO, 3.36 ERA
2B Brallan Perez: 1-3, walk, HBP, .250/.303/.271
DH Preston Scott: 1-3, double, walk, .272/.370/.518

Down East has lost 12 of 14 in June.  Don't blame Preston Scott (.298/.382/.532 in June) or newcomer Yanio Perez (.400/.471/.400).  Their teammates are batting .197/.250/.271.

Low-A: Hickory 3, at Greensboro (MIA) 8
Record: 27-40, 11 GB

SP Matt Ball: 4 IP, 8 H (1 HR), 7 R, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 2 SO, 5.67 ERA
RP Christian Torres: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 SO, 4.50 ERA
LF Eric Jenkins: 2-4, double, .209/.264/.313
2B Anderson Tejeda: 2-4, .216/.287/.361
RF Jose Almonte: 1-4, HR (6), .198/.252/.328

Ball has a 7.13 ERA since joining the rotation nearly a month ago.  His rates in homers, walks and strikeouts aren't bad, but he's allowing a ton of hits.  Leody Taveras (1-4) stole his ninth base.  I haven't written him up lately because he's been quiet in June (9-for-46, no walks).

Short-A: wet

That's a bad beat.  I count four home rainouts in the previous ten years, none on Opening Day.  They'll play two Sunday.  Read about RHP Grant Zawadzki, signed after an audition with the Rangers a few months ago.  I can vouch for his curve.

Five Years Ago Yesterday
Martin Perez: 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 5 SO for Round Rock
Nick Tepesch: 7 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 SO for Frisco
Kyle Hendricks: 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 SO for Myrtle Beach
Nick Martinez: 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 7 SO for Hickory

Today's Starters:
AAA: Clayton Blackburn
AA: Cole Hamels
High-A: Jonathan Hernandez
Low-A: Walter Weickel
Short-A: Cole Ragans
