The Farm Report -- 6/11/2017

Spokane held its FanFest yesterday.  The Opening Day starter will be Cole Ragans.

Rangers Farm Report: Games of Saturday 10 June

Box Scores

AAA: Round Rock 5, at OKC (LAD) 10
Record: 30-33, 7.5 GB

SP Anthony Bass: 5 IP, 9 H (2 HR), 8 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 4.17 ERA
RP Tanner Scheppers: 2 IP, 0 R, 2 SO, 5.82 ERA
2B Drew Robinson: 2-5, double
RF Travis Snider: 1-3, HR (3), walk

Scheppers off the DL: 6 IP, 1 R, 8 SO, .182/.250/.273 opposing line.  Lately, I've only seen him pitch in person while with my daughter, So I was distracted to say the least.  I hope to get a better look when Round Rock's interminable road trip ends.

Lewis Brinson will make his MLB debut today a little around 3pm CDT, leading off for the Brewers against Arizona.

AA: Frisco 0, at Midland (OAK) 6
Record: 27-34, 7 GB

SP Connor Sadzeck: 0.2 IP, 3 H (1 HR), 3 R, 2 BB, 2 SO, 5.23 ERA
RP Shane McCain: 4.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 6 SO, 5.47 ERA
RP Brady Feigl: 3 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 4 SO, 4.76 ERA

For the second time this season, Connor Sadzeck couldn't complete the 1st inning, running up 43 pitches before being pulled.  In the other outing, Sadzeck couldn't throw strikes at all.  This time, as Frisco Radio Broadcaster Ryan Rouillard helpfully pointed out to me last night, Sadzeck started all seven batters he faced with positive counts, only to see his pitch count rise astronomically due to foul balls and spotty control:

First batter: Ahead 1-2, went to 3-2, home run (8 pitches)
Second: Ahead 0-2, went to 2-2, single (5)
Third: Ahead 1-2, went to 2-2, strikeout (6)
Fourth: Ahead 1-2, went to 2-2, strikeout (6)
Fifth: Ahead 1-2, went to 3-2, walk (9)
Sixth: Ahead 0-1, went to 3-1, walk (5)
Seventh: Ahead 1-2, RBI single (4)

Meanwhile, Midland's Grant Holmes retired the first 16 Riders in order but lost his perfect game on a SO/WP.  In the 7th, he lost the no-hitter on a Jose Trevino liner that 3B Brett Vertigan nabbed but couldn't keep in his glove (I saw it and agree with the ruling, for what it's worth).  Frisco managed two other hits.

Shane McCain was a godsend in relief, while Brady Feigl was hit hard for the first time in AA.

High-A: Down East 1, at Potomac (WAS) 8
Record: 22-39, 13.5 GB

SP Jonathan Hernandez: 4.1 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 5 SO, 12.38 ERA
RF Preston Scott: 2-4
3B Luis La O: 1-3, double, HBP

Hernandez's second high-A start played out much like the first.  His BABIP is .656(!), probably a combination of bad luck and his occasional tendency to groove the fastball.  We'll have to be patient with him.  He has a future.

Low-A: at Hickory 5, Lexington (KAN) 6
Record: 24-38, 12.5 GB

SP Walker Weickel: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 SO, 0.00 ERA
CF Leody Taveras: 2-4, HR (5)
3B Ti'Quan Forbes: 2-4, double
2B Yeyson Yrizarri: 2-3, double

Taveras homered for the first time in nearly a month.  He's had a slow June (.167/.194/.300), but his stats weren't anything special in Arizona or Spokane last year, either.  That said, his five homers in 2017 are four more than last year in 14 fewer games. Also, his walk and strikeout ratios have held up well at a higher well.  He's fine.

Five Years Ago Yesterday
Justin Grimm gave up a three-run homer to future/former Ranger Michael Choice, and the Riders struck out nine times against Dan Straily.  I offered a topical reminder on why I don't bother with win-loss records: "[Kyle] Hendricks' ERA is 25% better than the park-adjusted league average, but his record is 1-7.  Barret Loux's ERA is 30% better than his respective league, and he's 11-0."

Today's Starters:
AAA: Clayton Blackburn
AA: Ariel Jurado
High-A: Jeffrey Springs
Low-A: Kyle Cody
