The Farm Report -- 6/6/2017

Rangers Farm Report: Games of Monday 5 June
Box Scores

AAA: Round Rock 10, at Col. Springs (MIL) 7
Record: 28-30, 7.5 GB

SP Clayton Blackburn: 5.2 IP, 11 H, 7 R, 1 BB, 3 SO, 5.49 ERA
CF Drew Robinson: 2-5, double, HR (4), .268/.379/.464
C Brett Nicholas: 3-5, double, HR (5), .352/.406/.544
3B Will Middlebrooks: 1-3, 2 walks, .292/.359/.420
1B Ronald Guzman: 2-4, walk, .292/.359/.420
2B Hanser Alberto: 4-5, HR (1)

The Express survived the first of four days in Colorado Springs' hitter-friendly park.*  Sky Sox starter Andy Oliver allowed all three Round Rock homers in just two innings; indeed, Drew Robinson homered on the game's second pitch, and Brett Nicholas followed suit three pitches later.  Reliever Tim Dillard gave up seven in the 4th, after which Round Rock held on.  R.J. Alvarez successfully faced down the tying run at the plate in the 8th, and Preston Claiborne did likewise in the 9th.

40-man options for replacing Mike Napoli if he's DL'ed are Nicholas, Robinson, Jurickson Profar, Ronald Guzman, a rehabbing Hanser Alberto and newcomer Peter O'Brien.  I've listed them in the order I'd choose, if I had the power.  Texas will play under National League rules in the the next five games.

* During the past three years, the park has been surprisingly neutral in terms of homers, but the Sky Sox and their opponents are batting .308 in Colorado Springs versus only .247 on the road.  An average offense should score 5.9 runs per game there compared to only 4.5 at the Dell Diamond.  This information may become more meaningful to Rangers fans in April 2019.

AA: off

Yohander Mendez and Collin Wiles shared the Texas League Pitcher of the Week award for their back-to-back seven-inning shutouts.  OF Royce Bolinger, who hit three homers in those two games, is the Player of the Week.

High-A: at Down East 4, Wilmington (KAN) 5
Record: 21-36, 11.5 GB

SP Frank Lopez: 2.1 IP, 5 H (1 HR), 3 R, 3 BB, 2 SO, 9.45 ERA
RP RP Jacob Shortslef: 3.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 SO, 4.44 ERA
RP Ricardo Rodriguez: 2 IP, R, 2 SO, 1.90 ERA
SS Josh Morgan: 2-4, .263/.310/.402
3B Luis Yander La O: 1-3, HR (6), HBP, .305/.354/.442

Ricardo Rodriguez has a drawn-out perfect game going: 24 straight retired during his last six outings, including 11 strikeouts.  Rodriguez singed back in 2010 and missed last year after Tommy John surgery in late 2015.

Low-A: off

1B/OF Yanio Perez and catcher Ricardo Valencia will represent Hickory in the South Atlantic League All-Star game in two weeks.  I haven't written much about Valencia, who's 24 and spent much of the past two years as a backup or fill-in, but he's having his best stateside season (.286/.342/.448).  Perez has been Hickory's best hitter, ranking in the league's top five in all the slash categories (.333/.400/.572) and homers (9).

Although Hickory's pitching has been historically bad on a macro level, long reliever Kaleb Fontenot (3.41 ERA, 49 SO in 34 IP) would be a worthy addition to the squad if someone else is needed.

Five Years Ago Yesterday
A slow day.  Kyle Hendricks's streak of batters without a walk ended at 153, and in fact he walked three in a stretch of 13 batters during his 6.1 innings in Myrtle Beach's 5-4 win.

Today's Starters:
AAA: Allen Webster
AA: Ariel Jurado
High-A: Emerson Martinez
Low-A: Mike Matuella
