The Farm Report -- 5/17/2017

The Rangers announced their minor league award winners for April:
Player: OF Yanio Perez, Hickory
Pitcher: Collin Wiles, Frisco
Reliever: Ricardo Rodriguez, Down East
Defender: OF Leody Taveras, Hickory

Rangers Farm Report: Games of Tuesday 16 May

Box Scores

AAA: Round Rock 0, at Reno (ARI) 9
Record: 15-24, 10 GB

SP Eddie Gamboa: 4.2 IP, 9 H (2 HR), 8 R, 3 BB, 2 SO, 7.56 ERA
C Brett Nicholas: 1-3, double, walk

Round Rock was three-hit.  The Express are 1-6 and have been outscored 43-15 on the western road trip.  Old newcomer Drew Stubbs started in CF.

AA: at Frisco 4, Midland (OAK) 10
Record: 16-22, 6 GB

SP David Ledbetter: 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 3 SO, 3.60 ERA
3B Isiah Kiner-Falefa: 2-3, walk, SB (4), .274/.361/.363
CF Jose Cardona: 2-3, HR (1), walk, .306/.354/.397

The floodgates opened after a two-out error by SS Michael De Leon in the 6th.  Joe Filomeno allowed a three-run homer (his second deep fly of the inning), and Ryne Slack gave up another run on a walk and two hits.  Cardona does have a little pop despite tallying just his first homer.  He hit 14 last year (admittedly in High Desert) and 10 for Hickory in 2015.

Extra credit to Matt Lipka, who pinch-ran in the 16-inning marathon in San Antonio on Sunday, played for Round Rock in Reno Monday, and started at 2B for Frisco last night.

High-A: Down East 2, at Carolina (MIL) 11
Record: 15-23, 8.5 GB

SP Jeff Springs: 0.2 IP, 3 H, 7 R, 3 BB, 1 HBP, 0 SO, 6.67 ERA
RP Jairo Beras: 1 perfect inning
LF Ledarious Clark: 2-4, triple

The floodgates opened immediately.  Springs retired two of nine batters, and Omarlin Lopez (2.1 IP, 3 R) had three inherited runners score plus two of his own before getting the final out of the 1st.

OF Jairo Beras delivered a 1-2-3 8th on 14 pitches, nine for strikes.  Per the video coordinator's radar gun, Beras touched 98 MPH despite an all-arm delivery

Low-A: at Hickory 6,Greensboro (MIA) 1
Record: 15-23, 8 GB

SP Kyle Cody: 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 10 SO, 3.41 ERA
RP Tyler Ferguson: 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 SO, 5.84 ERA
1B Yanio Perez: 3-3, double, walk, .354/.430/.600
RF Jose Almonte: 2-4, .204/.281/.272
CF Miguel Aparicio: 1-3, walk, SB (1), .217/.333/.261

Mark Parker has an excellent summary.  Cody blew past his previous record of seven strikeouts in a game, and I wouldn't call it a fluke.  When on, he has the stuff to dominate the level.

Perez leads the league in OBP and ranks in the top three in the other slash stats.  I don't get the sense that Texas is in any hurry, but Perez could replicate his current usage (COF, 1B and a dash of 3B) in high-A without overly disrupting the Ducks' roster.

Five Years Ago Yesterday
Christian Villanueva and Odubel Herrera hit their second homers of the year, and Wilmer Font tossed five innings of one-run ball in a 3-2 win for Myrtle Beach.

Today's Starters:
AAA: Brady Dragmire
AA: Yohander Mendez
High-A: Tyler Davis
Low-A: off
