The Farm Report -- 4/17/2017

Rangers Farm Report: Games of Sunday 16 April
Box Scores ranked its top 22 Texas prospects.

Texas traded infielder Frandy de la Rosa to the Giants for righty Clayton Blackburn, 24.  Baseball America ranked Blackburn among San Francisco's top ten prospects for several years but dropped him to 22nd over the winter, and the Giants had designed him for assignment prior to the trade.  Blackburn offers a sinking fastball around 90 MPH, a curve generally touted as his best pitch, a slider and change.  He should join the Round Rock rotation and serve as depth to the parent club.

Texas acquired de la Rosa from the Cubs for reliever Spencer Patton after 2015.  (If you're worried about the results of yet another trade with the Cubs, know that Patton is pitching very well.  In Japan.)   De la Rosa lacks the ability for shortstop and hit .250/.330/.351 as a 20-year-old in Hickory last year.  He'll need the bat to develop to have a shot at a utility career.

AAA: Round Rock 3, at Iowa (CHC) 6
Record: 5-6, 1 GB

SP Tyler Wagner: 4.2 IP, 4 H (1 HR), 6 R, 4 BB, 1 HBP, 3 SO, 7.71 ERA
RP Anthony Bass: 2 scoreless IP, 2 H, 5 SO, 0.00 ERA
2B Luis Marte: 2-3, double

Bass continues to produce superior results.  He's up to 16 strikeouts against three walks in 8.1 scoreless innings.  Bass spent 2016 in Japan after serving competently in long relief for the Rangers in 2015.

AA: off

High-A: at Down East 2, Salem (BOS) 9
Record: 6-5, 2 GB

SP Brett Martin: 4.2 IP, 10 H (1 HR), 7 R, 1 BB, 6 SO, 3.60 ERA
RP Blake Bass: 3 scoreless IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 4 SO, 3.00 ERA
C Josh Morgan: 1-3, HR (1), walk
LF Ledarious Clark: 2-4, double

Only three runs off Martin were earned, and he threw 64 of 87 pitches for strikes. On the downside, he'd never allowed double-digit hits before yesterday.

Morgan hit seven homers last year, albeit at hitter-friendly High Desert.  Salem didn't attempt a steal against him.

Low-A: off

Five Years Ago Yesterday
Uh oh. My "five years ago yesterday" from yesterday was a day ahead. I'll get back on track tomorrow.

AA: Collin Wiles
High-A: Peter Fairbanks
Low-A: Argenis Rodriguez
