As expected, 1B Ronald Guzman was the only prospect placed on Texas's 40-man roster today. The Rangers previously added utility man Drew Robinson to prevent his free agency. So, OF Jairo Beras, RHP Pedro Payano and several others will be eligible for the Rule 5 draft. I don't expect a claim on anyone, although Beras might appear on some "names to watch" lists because of his history. Beras, like Guzman and Nomar Mazara, was acquired for a bonus larger than than currently allowed without suffering a severe penalty, and he spent his first year as a professional on the suspended list. That's immaterial to his present prospect status. Guzman himself was eligible last year, so the exclusion of Beras (or anyone else) doesn't automatically make him a non-prospect and shouldn't be judged too harshly.
Texas also claimed Arizona RHP Tyler Wagner on waivers. Milwaukee drafted Wagner in 2012's 4th round (the same as since-traded RHP Alec Asher and former trade acquisition Pat Kivlehan), and last January he and others headed to Arizona in exchange for SS Jean Segura. Wagner has a 4.94 ERA in 23.2 MLB innings. While in AAA Reno, he was DL'ed in mid-May with a lat strain and didn't pitch again in 2016.
Also not unexpectedly, Texas designated RHP Adrian Sampson for assignment and outrighted him to AAA. The Rangers claimed him off waivers from Seattle on November 2.
The Rangers have 38 on the 40-man roster and can participate in the Rule 5 draft if they so choose.
Milwaukee added OFs Lewis Brinson and Ryan Cordell to the 40, and the Phillies added an astonishing 11 prospects including OF Nick Williams. Joining the Detroit 40 are ex-Rangers RHP Myles Jaye and LHP Chad Bell. The former was acquired by Texas for LHP Will Lamb last winter, then shipped with C Bobby Wilson for Detroit C Bryan Holaday. Texas later sent Bell to the Tigers for, guess who, Bobby Wilson.
The Angels designated ex-Rangers righty Abel de los Santos for assignment.
The Diamondbacks also lost well-traveled former Rangers LHP Edwin Escobar on waivers to Cleveland, which outrighted C Chris Gimenez.
LHP Michael Roth, a rotation stalwart in Round Rock and a Ranger on Independence Day, has joined the Giants. Cincinnati signed free agent righty Jefri Hernandez, who spent the last two seasons with Texas, mostly in AA.
Texas named 3B Adrian Beltre the 2016 Rangers Player of the Year.
The Arizona Fall League's Surprise Saguaros, populated in part by Rangers, won Thursday to secure a spot in Saturday's one-game Championship. Recently active Rangers include OF Scott Heineman, IF Andy Ibanez, C/IF Isiah Kiner-Falefa, C Jose Trevino, and RHPs Johan Juan and Shane McCain. The MLB Network and MLB.com will carry the game at 2pm CST.
As Jamey mentioned earlier, Texas signed RHP Andrew Cashner to a one-year deal.
This may or may not be all the Rangers-related news of the day.
