In its final season, High Desert has advanced to the Cal League finals for the first time in seven years. David Ledbetter had fared pretty well against Lancaster in six previous starts (4.54 ERA, .253/.315/.415 oppo line) and saved his best for last. Jose Hernandez (7 IP, 1 UER) matched Ledbetter's success, but after he departed, the Mavs scored three runs on four hits in successive innings.
Lancaster couldn't capitalize on two late opportunities. In the 7th, Matt Milroy relieved Ledbetter with a runner on 1st and two out. Milroy hit a batter on his first pitch, unleashed a wild pitch on his second, and walked his second batter to load the bases with the game still tied. Millroy finally whiffed Aaron Mizell to end the threat. In the 8th, Nick Gardewine issued a bases-loaded walk in relief of Felix Carvallo, but another strikeout again stranded three. Gardewine sent the side down in order in the 9th.
Conversely, High Desert collected four hits with runners in scoring position across the 8th and 9th. Juremi Profar and Jose Cardona had hits in both innings, and Profar scored twice.
The Mavs will travel north to Visalia to face the Colorado-affiliated Rawhide on Thursday night. In a touch of irony, High Desert will conclude its existence in the ballpark from which its landlord sought eviction before the season. Games 3, 4 and 5 (the latter two only if necessary) are scheduled in Adelanto.
