In five previous starts against Lancaster, Collin Wiles had a classic Cal League good/bad line, limiting baserunners (.233 average, .278 OBP) but surrendering six homers (.514 slugging). Last night was more of the same, as the JetHawks hit two solo homers but reached at a modest .304 clip in Wiles' six innings.
Meanwhile, the Mavs plated eight in the first three innings, including a five-run, ten-batter 2nd. High Desert coasted until the 9th, when the Hawks scored twice and put three more aboard. Nick Gardewine finally induced a groundout to leave the tying run in the on-deck circle.
David Ledbetter (5.45 ERA in 135 IP) will start for High Desert tonight, while righty Jose Hernandez (3.48 ERA, 9 BB, 43 SO in 44 IP) will try to stave off elimination for Lancaster.
Adelanto's Heritage Field will host at least one more baseball event before it gives way completely to motocross rallies and so forth: possibly Game 5 of this series, possibly Game 3 of the league finals. Bakersfield was not so fortunate, as Visalia eliminated the Blaze for the final time last night and will face the winner of the High Desert - Lancaster series. If you love minor league history, please set aside some time for Bobby DeMuro's 37,000-word eulogy for the Bakersfield Blaze at Today's Knuckleball
