The Farm Report -- 7/26/2014

Looks like I owe Jerome Williams an apology.

Rangers Farm Report: Games of Friday 25 July

Stars of the Day
AAA: Klein / Hoying, Strausborger, Nicholas
AA: Claudio / Gallo, Wise
Hi-A: McElwee
Lo-A: Wiles / De Leon, Mazara, Castro
Short-A: Hoppe / Spivey

AAA: Round Rock 12, at Colorado Springs (COL) 4
Record: 53-51, -2.5

SP Phil Irwin: 5 innings, 11 hits, 4 runs, 0 walks, 6 strikeouts, 3.05 ERA
RP Phil Klein: 3 perfect innings, 4 strikeouts
RP Spencer Patton: 1 scoreless inning, 1 runner, 2 strikeouts
RF Jared Hoying: 2-5, double, 17th homer
CF Ryan Strausborger: 2-4, double, 1st homer, walk
C Brett Nicholas: 2-4, 8th homer

Ah, Colorado Springs, where offense is in permanent bloom.  Round Rock also received two hits from Luis Sardinas, Michael Choice, Carlos Pena and Ryan Rua.  Completely indifferent to altitude and humidity, Phil Klein retired nine batters in order.  Opponents are hitting .100/.224/.100 with a 43% strikeout rate against him.  I've got video of him in raw form that I need to edit.  Been a little hectic lately in the Lucas household.

Texas released 40-man member RHP Justin Marks from Round Rock.  He hadn't pitched since Independence Day and was on the disabled list.  He posted a 5.06 ERA in 5 appearances with the Express.

AA: at Frisco 7, San Antonio (SDG) 4
Record: 19-16, -2.0

SP Alex Claudio: 6 innings, 7 hits, 3 runs, 0 walks, 3 strikeouts, 2.53 ERA
RP Will Lamb: 1 scoreless inning, 1 runner, 1 strikeout, 1.08 ERA
3B Joey Gallo: 1-3, 14th homer, walk, .278/.366/.625
C JT Wise: 1-4, 1st homer
SS Hanser Alberto : 2-4

Coming off a career-high nine games without a homer, Gallo went deep for the fourth time in five days.  Think about that.  Gallo's played 267 games and never gone ten on a row without a home run.

Texas promoted LHP Andrew Faulkner to Frisco.  The media-released MiLB report accidentally listed him as a starter for both Myrtle Beach and Frisco on Friday, hinting that something was afoot.  Faulkner throws a low-90s fastball, splitter, curve and regular change.  His fastball tends to run in on righties, as does his slurvy curve.  Faulkner isn't on the level of Chi Chi Gonzalez, Luke Jackson or newly acquired Jake Thompson but has turned himself into a pitcher worth eyeing.  Thompson was officially assigned to Frisco and will start Tuesday.  Alex Claudio might return to the bullpen with the arrival of Faulkner and Thompson, which is fine by me.  I think the changeup specialist's future is in the pen.  This would leave a rotation of Chi Chi Gonzalez, Jake Thompson, Alec Asher, Jerad Eickhoff and Andrew Faulkner, the former three being among Texas's top ten prospects (perhaps all in the top six).

Texas also removed LHP Joseph Ortiz from the 60-day DL and optioned him to Frisco.  He'll enter 2015 with one more option.

High-A: Myrtle Beach 0, at Salem (BOS) 6
Record: 18-18, -1.5

SP Ryan Bores: 6 innings, 13 runners, 6 runs, 3.04 ERA
RP Josh McElwee: 2 scoreless innings, 1 run, 4 strikeouts

Nothing to see here. Four hits and 15 strikeouts for the good guys.

Low-A: at Hickory 1, West Virginia (PIT) 6
Record: 19-16, -4.0

SP Frank Lopez: 2 innings, 1 hit, 2 runs, 2 walks, 3 strikeouts, 2.43 ERA
RP Akeem Bostick: 4 innings, 5 runners (1 HR), 4 runs, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts, 5.24 ERA
RP Collin Wiles: 3 innings, 2 runners, 3 strikeouts, 4.38 ERA
2B Michael De Leon: 2-3, walk, .240/.294/.288
RF Nomar Mazara: 2-4, double, 17th homer, .263/.350/.464
3B Janluis Castro: 1-2, 2 walks

Mazara moved into sole possession of second place in the league in homers, two behind Travis Demeritte.  He's already drawn six more walks than last year in 27 fewer games.  He won't turn 20 until next April.

Frank Lopez returned from the DL.  Bostick's run of exceptionally poor form continued, while Collin Wiles, the 53rd pick in 2012, pitched effectively for the second time in a row since coming off the DL.

Short-A: Spokane 3, at Salem-Keizer (SFO) 5
Record: 0-4 ,-3.0

SP Richelson Pena: 4.1 innings, 7 hits, 5 runs, 1 walk, 5 strikeouts, 2.89 ERA
RP Jason Hoppe: 2.2 perfect innings, 3 strikeouts, 2.08 ERA
RP Kevin Matthews: 1 scoreless inning, 1 walk, 1 strikeout
2B Seth Spivey: 2-4, 3rd homer, .366/.441/.507

Matthews made his first appearance with Spokane.  He'd been rehabbing in Arizona.  Selected 33rd overall in 2011, Matthews has pitched only 112 professional innings, disabled by bone spurs in his shoulder that required two procedures.

Rookie: off
Second half starts today.  The Rangers (a league-best 18-9), Indians and Angels won their first-half divisions.

Five Years Ago Yesterday
Top prospect Alcides Escobar singled and tripled against Neftali Feliz, who struck out five in two AAA innings.  Frisco's Blake Beavan extended his walkless streak to 114 batters while striking out three in seven innings.  Rookie-leaguer Tomas Telis smacked his first homer on US soil.

Today's Starters
AAA: Luke Jackson
AA: Alec Asher
Hi-A: Sam Wolff
Lo-A: Tyler Smith
Short-A: Derek Thompson
Rookie: Nick Green
