The Farm Report -- 7/23/2014

Rangers Farm Report: Games of Tuesday 22 July

Stars of the Day
AAA: Ross, Klein / Choice, Hoying
AA: Gallo, Herrera, Skole
Hi-A: Payano
Short-A: Perez / Vivili
Rookie: Ortiz

AAA: Round Rock 4, at Oklahoma City (HOU) 1

Record: 51-50, -1.5

SP Robbie Ross: 6 innings, 8 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, 6 strikeouts, 6.66 ERA
RP Phil Klein: 2 scoreless innings, 3 walks, 4 strikeouts, 0.00 ERA
RP Spencer Patton: 1 perfect inning, 2 strikeouts
LF Michael Choice: 2-4, double, .282/.348/.462
CF Jared Hoying: 1-3, 16th homer, walk, .249/.311/.468

Klein was unusually walk-prone but maintained his 0.00 ERA and dropped his opposing line to .119/.245/.119 with a 43% strikeout rate.  Klein is Rule 5-eiligible if left unprotected this winter.  Texas's 40-man maneuvers are going to be interesting, what with nine on the 60-day DL who'll need to be reinstated and a high-than-usual number of intriguing possibilities for addition (aside from Luke Jackson and Jorge Alfaro, who are locks).

AA: Frisco 6, at Midland (OAK) 7 (7)
AA: Frisco 8, at Midland (OAK) 3 (7)
Record: 17-15, -3.0

SP Jerad Eickhoff (1): 5.1 innings, 6 hits, 6 runs, 3 walks, 2 strikeouts, 4.33 ERA
SP Martire Garcia (2): 3 innings, 4 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, 3 strikeouts, 1.74 ERA
RP Keone Kela (2): 1 scoreless inning, 2 hits, 1 strikeout, 2.52 ERA
3B Joey Gallo: 4-7, 11th homer, .278/.364/.586
2B Odubel Herrera: 3-6, double, 2 walks, .348/.391/.430
CF Jake Skole: 3-6, double, .236/.308/.329
C J.T. Wise: 4-4, double

In his first at-bat, Gallo struck out for the 64th time in 146 plate appearances (44%), matching his number of strikeouts in 246 appearances at Myrtle Beach (26%).  In his second at-bat, Gallo crushed a pitch to right center for his 32nd homer of the year.  Wise is a recent indy-ball addition.

High-A: at Myrtle Beach 0, Frederick (BAL) 4
Record: 17-16, -2.0
Video recap

SP Victor Payano: 6 innings, 4 hits, 1 run, 3 walks, 1 strikeout, 4.80 ERA
C Jorge Alfaro: 1-3, walk

Myrtle Beach managed three singles against top prospect Dylan Bundy.  Cody Buckel (1 IP, 1 R) struck out his first two batters looking on curves but walked the next two and surrendered a run on a single.

Low-A: off

Short-A: Spokane 4, at Salem-Keizer (SFO) 10

Record: 0-1 (beginning of second half)

SP Reed Garrett: 4.2 innings, 9 hits, 6 runs, 3 walks, 3 strikeouts, 4.95 ERA
RP David Perez: 2 scoreless innings, 2 runners, 2 strikeouts (0.00 ERA)
1B Fernando Vivili: 2-4, double, HBP

I can't say I was expecting victory in a road game the night after clinching the division.  Spokane was limited to singles outside of Vivili.  Perez, a former top prospect returning from injury, allowed just his second hit in 11 innings, although he has walked eight.

Rookie: Rangers 10, at Mariners 11 (11)
Rookie: Rangers, 2 at Mariners 1
Record: 18-7, +6.0, first-half champion

The first game was the completion of a month-old contest suspended in the 10th.  I'd recapped most of it then.  Seattle scored a run in the 11th off Jacob Raffaele on three consecutive singles and a sac fly.  As for the regularly scheduled contest:

SP Frank Lopez (rehab): 2 perfect innings, 2 strikeouts
RP Luis Ortiz: 3 scoreless innings, 1 hit, 3 strikeouts, 0.00 ERA
RP Omarlin Lopez: 2 innings, 2 runners (1 HR), 1 run, 1 strikeout, 4.50 ERA
CF Darius Day: 1-3, walk

The first-rounder Ortiz made his fourth and longest appearance, effective using an 94 MPH changeup and 90-93 fastball per observer Jay Hashop (@sevenfuturehit).

Five Years Ago Yesterday
Bakersfield's home game was postponed by a flooded clubhouse, par for the course at "Historic" Sam Lynn Ballpark.

Today's Starters
AAA: Jerome Williams
AA: Chi Chi Gonzalez
Hi-A: Chad James
Lo-A: Ricardo Rodriguez
Short-A: Andrew Barnett
Rookie: Joe Palumbo
