The Futures Game will show on the MLB Network at 4pm CDT.  3B Joey Gallo and C Jorge Alfaro will participate.

Rangers Farm Report: Games of Saturday 12 July

Stars of the Day
AAA: none
AA: Eickhoff
Hi-A: Beck
Lo-A: Wiper, Slack / Mazara, Beck, Castro
Short-A: Garrett, Perez / Spivey, Tendler, Trevino
Rookie: Palumbo / Morgan, Caraballo

AAA: Round Rock 3, at Nashville (MIL) 5
Record: 47-47, -2.5

SP Justin Germano: 8 innings, 5 runs, 4.31 ERA

The exemplar of nondescript AAA games.  Luis Sardinas (1-4) is hitting .278/.304/.407 in 12 games.

AA: at Frisco 6, Corpus Christi (HOU) 2

Record: 11-10, -3.0

SP Jerad Eickhoff: 7 innings, 3 hits (1 HR), 2 runs, 1 walk, 7 strikeouts, 4.06 ERA
RP Keone Kela: 1.1 scoreless innings, 1 hit, 1 strikeout
1B Jim Adduci: 2-3
DH Geovanny Soto: 2-3, double, walk
SS Hanser Alberto: 2-4

Eickhoff has a 3.00 ERA in his last six starts, although his tendency remains to give up runners and runs late:
Innings 1-3: 3.35 ERA, .290 OBP
Innings 4-5: 4.50 ERA, .319 OBP
Innings 6-7: 10.64 ERA, .452 OBP

Adduci has four hits in three rehab games.

High-A: at Myrtle Beach 8, Lynchburg (ATL) 6
Record: 14-10, -1.0
Video Recap

SP Victor Payano: 5 innings, 6 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks, 3 strikeouts, 5.10 ERA
RP Cody Buckel: 1.2 innings, 5 runners, 2 runs, 3 strikeouts
RP Jose Leclerc: 1 scoreless innings, 2 hits, 0 walks, 1 strikeout
1B Preston Beck: 2-3, double, walk, HBP, .262/.377/.430
2B Christopher Bostick: 2-4, double, .243/.316/.384

Payano has been amazingly consistent, issuing more walks than strikeouts in every month.  The sometimes control-impaired LeClerc has five consecutive walk-free outings.

The Pelicans turned a 5-4-3 triple play: Luis Mendez to Christopher Bostick to Preston Beck.

Low-A: Hickory 8, at Rome (ATL) 1
Record: 15-9, -1.0

SP Cole Wiper: 6 innings, 4 walks, 1 run, 4 hits, 5 strikeouts, 3.83 ERA
RP Ryne Slack: 3 scoreless inning, 1 runner, 1 strikeout, 3.14 ERA
RF Nomar Mazara: 1-3, 13th homer, 2 walks
DH Jairo Beras: 4-5, double
3B Janluis Castro: 3-4, double, walk

I estimate Mazara's homer at 420 feet.  Beras collected his first four-hit game and is hitting .380/.418/.608 in the last 30 days.  Up until the last month, he was hitting .188/.258/.218.  A trustworthy eyewitness tells me his load and swing is much less noisy.

Short-A: Spokane 7, at Tri-City (COL) 3
Record: 21-8, +4.0, magic number 6

SP Reed Garrett: 6 innings, 6 hits, 3 run, 0 walks, 5 strikeouts, 3.82 ERA
RP David Perez: 2 scoreless innings, 3 walks, 2 strikeouts, 0.00 ERA
LF Eduard Pinto: 2-5, double
2B Seth Spivey: 3-5, double
DH Jose Trevino: 2-5, 6th homer
RF Luke Tendler: 2-4, walk

The four hitters listed are the top four in the order, in order.  Despite three walks, Perez maintained his flawless ERA.  Opposing hitters are .034/.263/.034 against him; he's allowed one hit and walked or plunked nine.

Rookie: at Rangers 4, Indians 5

Record: 13-3, +6.0, magic number 6

SP Frank Lopez: 1 inning, 1 run
RP Joe Palumbo: 4 innings, 0 hits, 1 run. 2 walks, 4 strikeouts, 1.69 ERA
2B Josh Morgan: 1-3, 2 walks, .328/.453/.361
LF Oliver Caraballo: 2-3, double, walk, .371/.452/.600

Out since mid-May, Hickory's Lopez made his first rehab appearance.

Jamey Newberg

Dallas attorney Jamey Newberg has been commenting on Rangers from the big club down through the entire farm system since 1998.

Scott Lucas was born in Arlington, Texas, to Richard and Becky Lucas. He lived mostly in Arlington before moving to Austin, where he graduated from The University of Texas. Scott works for Austin Valuation Consultants, Ltd., and has published several boring articles about real estate appraisal and environmental contamination. He makes a swell margarita and refuses to run longer than ten kilometres.
