Rangers Farm Report: Games of Tuesday 8 July

Stars of the Day
AAA: Nicholas
Hi-A: Williams
Lo-A: Van Hoosier, Deglan
Short-A: Hunter / the offense

AAA: at Round Rock 5, Colorado Springs (COL) 4
Record: 46-44, -1.5

SP Ryan Feierabend: 6 innings, 3 runs, 4.54 ERA
RP Matt West: 1 scoreless inning, 2 hits
RP Ben Rowen: 1 scoreless inning, 1 hit, 4th save
SS Luis Sardinas: 2-4, .306/.342/.444 in 8 games
1B/C Brett Nicholas: 2-4, double, .254/.314/.366
C Geovanny Soto: 0-3.

Soto is 0-16 with seven strikeouts in his rehab assignment.

Texas signed 28-year-old C/1B J.T. Wise out of indy Wichita.  The Dodgers drafted him in the 5th round of 2009 (Texas pick: currently injured RHP Nick McBride).

Players used by Round Rock during the season:
2011: 58
2012: 51
2013: 60
2014: 64 and counting

AA: off
I'd neglected to mention that Texas promoted SS Hanser Alberto back to Frisco.  The 21-year-old Alberto batted .271/.301/.408 in 70 games with Myrtle Beach.

High-A: Myrtle Beach 9, at Winston-Salem (CHW) 13

Record: 11-9, tied for 1st

SP Luis Parra: 5 innings, 7 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk, 3 strikeouts, 4.20 ERA
RP Cody Buckel: 0.1 innings, 5 hits, 7 runs, 1 walk, 1 HBP
LF Nick Williams: 3-5, 9th and 10th homers, 5 RBI
RF Royce Bolinger, DH David Lyon, and 3B Luis Mendez: 2-5, double

Williams is batting .361/.418/.721 with five homers in 15 games off the DL.  He and Alfaro are tied for 6th in the league in that category.  Joey Gallo still leads with 21; the threat to the title is 25-year-old former 1st-rounder Michael Burgess, who has 15 with Frederick.

Low-A: at Hickory 8, Lexington (KAN) 16

Record: 13-7, -1.0

SP Akeem Bostick: 1.2 innings, 7 hits, 8 runs, 3 walks, 1 strikeout, 4.36 ERA
RP Janluis Castro: 1 scoreless inning, 2 hits, 2 strikeouts
DH Evan Van Hoosier: 2-5, 7th homer
C Kellin Deglan: 2-5, double, 13th homer
1B Ronald Guzman: 2-3, 2 doubles, walk

Bostick's bid at a second consecutive Pitcher Of The Month award took a body blow.  Janluis Castro is an infielder.  An infielder with a 0.00 ERA and 44% strikeout rate in 2.1 professional innings.  During the past month, Deglan is batting .286/.360/.623 with seven of his 13 homers.  Deglan has caught 70% of Hickory's games, a very high proportion for the minors.   As long as Texas intends to play him that frequently, he'll stay in Hickory.

Short-A: at Spokane 16, Tri-City (COL) 4

Record: 18-7, +3.0

SP Andrew Barnett: 5 innings, 7 hits, 4 runs, 3 walks, 1 strikeout, 4.29 ERA
RP Darrell Hunter: 2 scoreless innings, 3 hits, 2 strikeouts
2B Seth Spivey: 4-5, walk, .380/.450/.479
C Jose Trevino: 3-6, .330/.375/.608
RF Luke Tendler: 2-6, double, .345/.437/.563
CF Zach Cone: 2-4, double, 2 walks, .200/.367/.371
3B Juremi Profar: 3-5, .294/.333/.318

26 baserunners, 13 hits with runners in scoring position.  Spivey, Tendler and Trevino rank 1st, 2nd and 4th in the league in average, respectively, and catcher Marcus Green leads with a .453 OBP.

Rookie: Rangers at Reds (suspended, lightning)
Four of 16 games have been suspended: by rain, a power outage, wind and lightning.

Five Years Ago Yesterday
Reliever Evan Reed (3rd round, 2007) saved his 12th game in 13 tries.  Reed thrived in a repeat assignment to high-A Bakersfield after struggling as a starter.  Reed, now with Detroit, was optioned to AAA recently after posting a 4.88 ERA in 27.2 innings with the Tigers.

Today's Starters
AAA: Robbie Ross
AA: Edwar Cabrera
Hi-A: Chad Bell
Lo-A: Tyler Smith
Short-A: Nick Gardewine

Jamey Newberg

Dallas attorney Jamey Newberg has been commenting on Rangers from the big club down through the entire farm system since 1998.

Scott Lucas

Scott Lucas was born in Arlington, Texas, to Richard and Becky Lucas. He lived mostly in Arlington before moving to Austin, where he graduated from The University of Texas. Scott works for Austin Valuation Consultants, Ltd., and has published several boring articles about real estate appraisal and environmental contamination. He makes a swell margarita and refuses to run longer than ten kilometres.

Eleanor grew up watching the AAA Mudhens in Toledo, Ohio. A loyal Ranger fan since 1979, she works "behind the scenes" at the Newberg Report.
