The Farm Report -- 7/5/2014

A day after he left the field with a taped ankle, 2012 1st-rounder Lewis Brinson is headed to high-A Myrtle Beach.  Plagued by leg injuries, the center fielder has played only 43 games but is hitting a stout .335/.405/.579 with ten homers.

Rangers Farm Report: Games of Friday 4 July

Record: 8-6, -1.5

C Pat Cantwell: 3-4, double

SP Alex Claudio: 4 innings, 5 hits, 5 runs, 0 walks, 2 strikeouts, 0.00 ERA
RP Jimmy Reyes: 2 scoreless innings, 5 strikeouts

All the runs against Claudio were unearned because of a Drew Robinson error, but he allowed five hits and committed a balk during the inning.  Telis made his professional debut at 1B.  He's listed at 5'8".  Gallo earned his first intentional walk in AA, after which Frisco scored three more runs in the inning.

High-A: Myrtle Beach 4, at Potomac (WAS) 2
Record: 10-5, +0.5

CF Chris Garia: 1-3, 2nd homer, walk,
2B Christopher Bostick: 2-4, walk, 11th steal

RP Cody Buckel: 3 innings, 3 hits, 2 runs, 0 walks, 4 strikeouts

Garia (.292/.361/.425) led off the contest with his eighth career homer.  Bostick might be pulling out of a slump that created a line of .205/.275/.310 over six weeks.

Buckel produced his longest walk-free outing since the end of 2012, before his troubles began.  Buckel has seven consecutive outings without more walks than innings pitched; his walk rate is that span is a reasonable 11%.

Low-A: at Hickory 7, Savannah (NYM) 9
Record: 13-3, +1.0

DH Joe Jackson: 2-5, 4th homer
3B Travis Demeritte: 2-5, 17th homer

Demeritte (.239/.337/.506) continues to lead low-A and all teenagers in homers.  Ronald Guzman and Jairo Beras also had two hits.

Short-A: at Spokane 3, Vancouver (TOR) 10
Record: 16-6, +3.0

3B Jose Trevino: 3-5, 4th and 5th homers

SP Richelson Pena: 5 innings, 3 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts, 4.03 ERA
RP Jason Hoppe: 3 scoreless innings, 5 strikeouts

Trevino (.333/.376/.644) leads the league in homers with Boise's 20-year-old Jeffrey Baez.  Trevino hit 31 in three seasons at Oral Roberts, a respectable total in the NCAA's new dead-ball era.

Rookie: Rangers 8, Indians 4
Record: 9-1, +4.5

LF Carlos Arroyo: 1-3, 2 walks
C Sherman Lacrus: 1-3 double, walk
SP Brett Martin: 2 innings, 0 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 5 strikeouts, 0.00 ERA
RP Kevin Matthews: 2 innings, 3 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 2 strikeouts

Martin is Texas's 4th rounder; the 19-year-old has fanned 11 of 23 batters faced.  Opponents are batting .438/.526/.469 against former first-rounder Matthews since his return from shoulder procedures.

Five Years Ago Yesterday
Rain washed out OKC's July 4th gate and Justin Smoak's AAA debut.  Frisco dumped Springfield 18-4 on a grand slam by OF Tim Smith and two homers by Johnny Whittleman and Chad Tracy.  Hickory's Leonel de los Santos was 3-5 with a three-run homer.  If you have no memory of de los Santos, you're doing it right.
