Frisco wins best-of-five semifinal 3-0
Through five scoreless innings, Frisco managed only four baserunners, two of whom were retired on the bases. Meanwhile, Nick Tepesch was twirling a no-hitter. Tepesch would one-hit the Hooks through seven innings on just 83 pitches. He walked three and struck out four. Ross Wolf retired four straight, two via strikeout, for the save. The league's best offense batted only .206/.267/.299 against the Riders.
Frisco struck for two in the 6th on singles by Engel Beltre, Leury Garcia, Chris McGuiness and Ryan Strausborger. In the 9th, Guilder Rodriguez singled home Jared Hoying (who had doubled), and with two out, Engel Beltre doubled in two runs of insurance. The entire lineup had at least one hit. Beltre and Leury Garcia were 2-5 with a double, and McGuiness singled twice and walked.
Springfield leads Tulsa 2-1 in the other series. Frisco will travel to the victorious city for the first two games of the finals and then host Games 3-5 (as needed) beginning next Friday the 14th.
I picked Corpus Christi in five games, as Frisco trainer Carlos Olivas helpfully reminded me last night. Ah, well. I count ten wins and seven losses in my predictions over the years. Olivas and strength and conditioning coach Eric McMahon were recently named the best in the Texas League at their respective jobs by a vote of peers. High-A: Myrtle Beach 0, at Winston-Salem 9
Myrtle Beach loses best-of-three semifinal 2-1
Myrtle Beach couldn't hold off Winston-Salem's offense any longer, and its solid season has come to an end.
The Dash hit a bases-loaded triple and loaded them again against Nick McBride, running him off with one out in the 3rd. Catcher Kevan Smith then hit a grand slam off reliever Francisco Mendoza. The Dash tallied seven hits, four walks and a hit-by-pitch in the first three innings. For the series, they batted .377 when they made contact. That's what they do. Josh McElwee (2 IP, 1 H, 2 SO) and Greg Williams (2 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 4 SO) prevented further damage.
SS Hanser Alberto was 2-4. Both 1B Brett Nicholas and RF Chris Grayson reached on a walk and single. The Pelicans batted .154/.238/.253 in the series.
In the finals, Winston-Salem will face Atlanta-affiliated Lynchburg, which knocked off the Royals' high-A club. Five Years Ago Today
Frisco lost in three straight to the San Antonio Missions after posting a team-record 85 wins during the regular season. Clinton won its elimination game 5-4 over Cedar Rapids to advance to the semifinals against Beloit. OF K.C. Herren plated three with two singles.
No games. I'll have a Texas League Finals preview when the time comes.
